Emprise Anemometers
The Emprise anemometer design uses a helical turbine to measure air velocity. As air passes through the anemometer, the turbine rotates at a speed directly proportional to air velocity. Turbine speed is sensed by infrared sensors. The blade rotates on a pair of precision ball bearings. The anemometer blade and support rings are machined from aluminum alloy plate using an extremely accurate electrical discharge machining (EDM) process. Anemometers are available in sizes from 2" to 5" diameter in 1/2" increments.
The Emprise anemometer was developed for use on automotive heat exchangers, but is ideally suited to a variety of flow measurement applications requiring compact and rugged instrumentation. Other applications include vehicle and building ventilation ducts, engine compartment airflow, intake and exhaust manifolds, brake cooling ducts, wind tunnels, and under vehicle airflow. Whenever an accurate and wide-ranging flow measurement is required, Emprise turbine anemometers will provide years of reliable service.
Advantages
- The latest generation anemometer provides a four pulse per revolution TTL level square wave proportional to air velocity. A separate discrete signal is provided to indicate direction of flow. Excitation power is 9-20 VDC.
- The compact size of the Emprise anemometer makes it ideal for measuring airflow in tight spaces. The anemometers are only 0.5" thick, allowing them to be installed in locations such as between a vehicle’s radiator and condenser.
- The anemometers can be custom designed for the application.
- Turbine anemometers provide an average velocity measurement of the area swept by the turbine. This means better overall accuracy for many applications when compared to pinpoint measurements made by “hot wire” thermal type anemometers.
- Turbine anemometers provide a wider flow range (turndown) than traditional differential pressure type instruments.
- Emprise anemometers can detect reverse flow. Standard anemometer circuitry detects reverse blade rotation indicating reverse airflow.
- Mass airflow measurements are attainable when Emprise anemometers are used in conjunction with temperature and pressure instrumentation.
- Simple, rugged design. Our anemometers have been used extensively in race cars and prototypes during high speed windtunnel and track testing. The bearings are highly resistant to contamination and are easily cleaned or replaced in the field.
- Experience counts. Emprise has been building turbine anemometers since 1985. No one has more experience in providing turbine anemometers and instrumentation systems for automotive radiator testing.
Signal Conditioning Unit
The analog signal converter unit provides frequency to analog conversion for anemometer signals. The unit may be specified for any number of channels. Output signals are provided for connection to the data acquisition system. Optional digital displays may be provided.
The serial signal converter unit accepts any number of anemometer signals and converts the data to RS-232, RS-485, Ethernet, Arcnet and other popular protocols.
Either signal converter unit is housed in either a 19" rack mount or portable chassis. A rugged “Black Box” style unit is available for onboard applications such as race cars. Overall dimensions vary depending on the number of channels. All wiring connections are rugged MS-type connectors or per your specifications. Power requirement is standard 115 VAC or 12 VDC.
